Description

The first Limoges China was manufactured in 1771.  Since that time, the product's name has grown so that the name "Limoges" evokes the art of fine china.  Though the soil was known to have existed in the Limoges region since 1765, it was not recognized as kaolin until 1768.  This extremely white clay has been considered by numerous historians to be the "white gold" of the Limousin region.  The manufacturing of Limoges china began in 1771 in an earthenware factory dating back to 1736.  From 1773, it became part of the domain of Count d'Artois who authorized the use of his initials "Limoges CD" on each piece of china.  Since 1842 when David Haviland left America to set up his factory in Limoges, the name Haviland has been synonymous with excellence in the field of Limoges porcelain.  Valencay is a reproduction from the Collection Grand Siecle series.
